Chicken Little follow-up

Last Friday my classes had the Firing Line activity described in my last blog entry. All in all, it was very successful. Some classes did better than others but overall I'm very encouraged with the student's efforts. We managed to cover several topics of technology that potentially do in the the world including global warming, nuclear weapons, biological and chemical weapons, cloning and terrorism. They discussed hybrid cars and life support systems. Many were very well prepared with comments from creditable sources. I required that they have articles printed from Galileo they they had highlighted and annotated. Several had whole folders of information with tabs to show each of the topics mentioned above! Since this is early in the year, I hope this bodes well for future Firing Lines.
Our next unit is on Archaeology and I need a good, pithy, controversial archaeological topic to use....any suggestions? (Mark, I'm talking to you!) I have been using an article about some dinosaur footprints in Alabama http://www.westga.edu/~bpsweb/BPS_Trips/bps_ft_00_01.html

for the past few years but now I'd like to find something more recent.

Use NAGPRA (Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act). This is a real "hot button" in the archaeological world and the Native American's. On the one hand archaeologists ARE disturbing burial sites and going against the traditions of these people; "Grave Robbing". On the other hand, there are tribes that are claiming ownership over bodies that aren't even theres and they are making it impossible to do this research properley. Use the example of Kennewick man. He is a real good example and it is a real derisive issue. Here's a link to explain the case. http://www.angelfire.com/hi2/hawaiiansovereignty/nagprageneralkennewick.html

Or you could do the constant battle over treasure hunters and actual archaeologists. Use Mel Fisher as an example. Yeah, he found one of the most treasure laden ships of the Spanis Armada, but he also destroyed the site and recorded almost no data in the process. Should treasure hunters be given ownership of lost property? In most cases the answer is no, but there are some that get rich from their discoveries. This can lead to would-be treasure hunters destroying site of great archaeological signifigance before they can be explored. Still, if Mel Fisher hadn't discoverd the Hitocha would anyone else have?

Raising of parts of the Titanic, possibly. Or maybe other ships that are graves.
